A Comparative Study on the Cognitive Function and Depressive Symptoms of the Aged in the Family and in the Institution



Abstract
The author administered Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) for cognitive function and Geriatric Depressive Scale(GDS) for depressive symptoms in the aged 337 persons who were 171 in the family and 166 in the institution.
@ES The Results were as follows:
@EN 1. The mean scores on MMSE were significantly low in the aged in the institution than in the aged in the family.
2. Older age, female in sex, longer duration from retirement and bereaved state in marital status were significantly related with lower MMSE scores.
3. higher educational background, good physical health condition, much monthly personal expenses, and divorced state in marital status were significantly related with higher MMSE scores.
4. The mean scores on GDS showed no statistical differences between the aged in the family and the aged in the institution.
5. Female in sex. divorced state in marital status were significantly related with higher GDS scores.
6. Much monthly personal expenses, good physical health condition were significantly related with lower GDS scores.
